This week, we look at how the first European Tour event of the season broke new ground by relaxing an age-old rule and we ask you whether it was the right call or not. You will also find our regular features, so take five minutes, grab a coffee and have a look through.

Competition news

On the Course...

The frozen conditions this Saturday resulted in a morning of frost greens for the competition, high points scoring and plenty of two's. The winning team was Mark Short and Stan Parry with 43 points, a win for the new members, who were disappointed to find out there was no honours board for a 15 hole winter competition... on temporary greens.... played from the short course...

This weekend is the Christmas competition. This is a 15 hole Stableford played from the YELLOW tees should the weather allow. Places for this competition are at a premium so if anybody is unable to make the weekend please could you cross off at the earliest opportunity.

Could I also remind members that the handicap committee introduced a local rule two weeks ago to allow members to lift, clean and drop the golf ball in the rough. This rule is still in operation until further notice.

This Tuesday the Ladies played their Christmas competition over 18 and 9 holes. The winning score was 48 points on the 18 hole competition and that was recorded by another new member Elaine Meigh. The tempoary greeens did help but that was still a great score on a tough cold day. The winner of the 9 hole competition with a score of 27 points was Jane Westgarth.

Seniors news

Seniors update

In November we held our annual ‘Hot Pot Supper’ which was a very successful and popular evening. Following the meal, Ian Hutchison was presented with the Chairmans Salver for his win earlier in the year.

We had an interesting talk from Carl Crocher concerning work going on at the course and our Chairman, Bob Nixon, read out a very amusing letter from Richard Beswick. Robbie Ross hosted the ‘Flying Snooker’ competition which saw Leo Byrne and John Chapman win 2 bottles of wine each. Overall an excellent evening which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.

The following are dates for Senior Stableford games in January.

Monday, 6 January 2020 - 11 & 18 holes.
Monday, January 2020 - 11 holes and lunch.
Monday, January 2020 - 11 & 18 holes.

If you have not yet played in a Senior Stableford and would like to be involved, simply book a time on B.R.S. and then on the day check in at the Pro’s Shop. If you decide to stay for lunch, include your name on the table plan which will be displayed on the notice board.

Tour news

Get shorty

Spaniard Pablo Larrazabal held on to win the Alfred Dunhill Championship by a single shot from Joel Sjoholm despite a final round 3-over-75.

However, that was not the story making the headlines.

For the first time on the European Tour, the competing players were allowed to wear shorts during the tournament due to the sweltering temperatures at Leopard Creek, South Africa.

Shorts had previously been restricted to just practice rounds and pro-ams across the board but discussions between players, European Tour CEO Keith Pelley, and tournament host Johann Rupert led to the decision to relax the rules - but for this tournament only!

So, what do you think? Was this the right call? Or would you rather golf at the elite level stuck to the long-standing tradition of trousers only?

How times have changed

We've got a little task for you. Next time you're down the club on a busy day, have a look around and count how many golfers are using an electric trolley compared to those that aren't. We think the number might surprise you...
