Whilst we are at it and with putting having played such an important role at The Open, we take a look at some interesting putting stats from the PGA Tour and explain why you should cut yourself some slack.

Competition news

Gawith Cup

Last Saturday the centenary trophy was successfully won by Lee Sharrock with a nett score of 71, his gross score of 77 was also enough to win the Colts Trophy.

The winner of the yellow Stableford was Noel Fagan with 35 points. Scoring was tough this weekend as the windy conditions, along with the tough rough made pars and birdies hard top come by.

This Saturday is the Gawith Cup, played from the White Tees, the yellow tee Stableford will also be an option should you not wish to compete in the medal.

England Golf Trust Stableford

Congratulations to Jean Monks who with a fantastic score of 39 points won the England Golf Trust Stableford, on what was a very hot and sticky day. Gabrielle Lanceley was runner up with a very good score of 38 points.

The nine-hole competition was won by Chris Marriot with 17 points.

The Open Sweepstake

What a fantastic Open Championship we witnessed this weekend, I know a lot of members would have been glued to the television, but three would have had a little more interest in the leaderboard than most.

Congratulations to Lyn Roberts who drew Shane Lowry out in the pro shop sweep and Chris Sills who picked out Tommy Fleetwood.

Third place was won by Ian Brew with Tony Finau. Credit has been added to the account of the winners.

Coaching news

Summer Junior Coaching

We had a fantastic first day on our Junior Summer school, around 18 children turned up, to try golf some for the very first time.

The weather was fantastic and all the children had a great time. The next session is this coming Friday at 9.30am.

This event is currently sold out, but we do intend to offer more coaching after the golf school has finished.

Please, could any parents or grandparents who are bringing the children to the coaching remember to bring plenty of drinks and sun cream as this Friday looks to be very hot again.

Cut yourself some slack

It makes sense that the closer the ball is to the hole the more chance we have of holing it, but how much easier is a 5-foot putt than a 10-foot putt? Well, here are some stats taken from the PGA Tour's website the week after this year's PGA Championship, which we think makes for interesting reading…

Percentage of putts made from various distances

Bear in mind these stats are from the top 20 putters on the PGA Tour, you can bet your bottom dollar that the percentages would be a little lower for us mere mortals. Either way, they really do highlight the importance of accuracy with our approach shots, not to mention distance control with our lag putts.

Improve on the greens

Hopefully, you're feeling a little better about your putting and beginning to reassess your expectations when on the greens.

Although you have no divine right to hole any putt, improving your stroke and having a putter that is suited to your technique will help to improve your percentages.
