Competition news

Weekly Round-Up

Last Saturday saw our Junior Captain Sam Johnston claim the Founders Day Salver, with a fantastic score of 39 points around a very difficult golf course, he beat four other members by one point to claim the Salver. This Saturday is the Grosvenor Elston trophy, the trophy will be played from the white tees as a medal, with a yellow Stableford option for anyone who wishes to play the yellow course.

This Tuesday just short of 70 ladies played for the EG Medal 3/ 9 hole Stableford. Congratulations to Lesley Webster, who beat Linda Weston by two shots to claim the medal. The nine-hole competition was won by Sandra Neillie with 18 points. Next week is the Centenary salver, there are still spaces on the BRS time sheet should any ladies still wish to enter.

Brocklehurst Cup

A double mixed success for Bob Nixon and Marion Park, after winning the Brocklehurst Cup the Sunday before last

This winning team also went on to win the Ham and Eggs competition the following Friday.

Bob is already seeing a return on his new driver he was fitted for in our Sky Trak studio.

Seniors news

Mixed Results

We had mixed results in June with a close match against Llangollen when we were narrowly beaten, a good win against Bromborough and unfortunately the match against Leasowe was cancelled due to the weather conditions.

On Sunday 27th July We will play a match with the Juniors, the match will be played in a new format and all the details are on the locker room notice board. There are spaces available so if you fancy testing your skills against the stars of tomorrow this will be the perfect opportunity, just add your name to the list.

The matches scheduled for August are as follows:

Friday 2nd August. Prenton. Away

Thursday 8th August. Llangollen. Away

Monday 12th August. Wallasey. Away

Anyone wishing to play should add their name to the notice displayed in the locker room 4 weeks before the match date.

Fitting news

TaylorMade Fitting Day

I have been lucky enough to secure another TaylorMade fitting day here at Caldy on Wednesday 31st July from 10am to 2pm.

Appointments will be on first come first served basis and are free of charge, lasting 30 minutes.

Please contact us to book an appointment as these events do fill quickly.

Open Championship Draw

With the Open Championship fast approaching, as usual we will be doing an "Open Championship Draw" here in the proshop.

Entries will be £2 per player and hopefully you can pick out the 2019 "Champion golfer of the year", prizes will be awarded for the first three places.

The Claret Jug was kindly brought here to Caldy this winter by David Reid, let’s hope your player is holding this aloft come Open Sunday.

Club Buggies

I have received delivery today of the new Club Buggies.

I have upgraded to the ClubCar precedent model which also features USB charging stations for any members wishing to charge up distance devices or mobile phones whilst playing.

Putting things right

Sometimes, it's the most obvious things that get overlooked. When it comes to golf, the club most used in a round is a putter so surely it's the part of the game that deserves most attention?

We know this isn't a reality for many, but a combination of working hard on your stroke and having a putter that is suited to your stroke type will certainly improve your chances on the greens - two things that this promotion is all about.

In the Shop

We have taken delivery yesterday of a range of fantastic Under Armour golf shirts. These shirts are priced at a competitive price of £39.95, with a range of sizes and colours.

We have had a good deal of interest in the Motocaddy trade-in deal, we now have taken our second drop, of the complete range of bags, push trollies and accessories, for any interested in upgrading their equipment.

Range news

In Full Flow

With the summer season now in full flow we will once again be offering availability for practice balls after 6pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Tokens will be available from the bar after 6pm, we will still need the one-hour time slot to pick up the range balls between 5 pm and 6pm, if members could grant us that time to pick the balls up safely and efficiently we would be most grateful.

Ladies Summer Golf Academy

With the weather finally improving after a rotten few weeks, I am now taking names and contact numbers for any ladies who wish to begin the game of golf, as I will be running again the popular "Ladies Summer Golf Academy".

These sessions will be one hour sessions running from 5.30pm to 6.30pm starting on Tuesday 9th July for 4 weeks. If any members have wives, family members or friends looking to try the game of golf please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Junior Coaching

We are running a Junior golf school starting on Tuesday 23rd July for two days a week across a fortnight.

The aim of this school is to introduce golf to non junior members. This School will be FREE OF CHARGE, but places will be limited for safety reasons and allocated on a first come first served basis.

If any members have family or know of friends who would like to join the school and try the game of golf please pass on contact details and get in touch with the pro shop to book their place.

A link for the junior school containing all details will be sent out in the weekend update.

Reading between the lines

One of the hardest things in golf is green reading; it is also something that the majority of golfers never learn how to do properly. So, without giving away all the secrets, here are some handy tips to help keep you on track and hole more putts.

High and low

Prior to reaching the green, take note of the high and low points of the surface and where your ball lies in respect to these. This will help you to build a general picture before reaching your ball.

360 picture

If you’re struggling to read which way your putt breaks from behind the ball, try walking around to the other side of the hole as this can often highlight any breaks you may have missed or reaffirm your original read.

Are you focusing on the wrong thing?

As soon as the ball has left the putter face, we know whether it’s going to be good or not. It’s like a sixth sense, right? But what constitutes a good putt? Many golfers let the final outcome decide this – i.e. whether the ball ends up in the hole or not – but that is arguably well out of our control. So, perhaps it's time to refocus on what we can control?

There are only two things we can really control when it comes to putting. The first is starting the ball on the correct line. Take Tiger Woods for example; the 15-time major winner focuses on a blade of grass he wants the ball to roll over immediately in front of him, which brings the intended target much closer to impact.

The second is getting the ball rolling correctly, which means imparting top spin as quickly as possible after impact rather than having it jumping and skidding in the air.

One way to control our putting is by utilising the technology in TaylorMade’s stunning Spider X putter.

It features an improved Pure Roll insert that has 45-degree grooves to help generate the aforementioned top spin as quickly as possible. The updated insert also produces a better sound and feel at contact, which many of you will love.
