This week we thought we would also do some digging into why worn grooves on your wedges can be seriously impacting your game as well as catching up with all the news around the club.

Competition news

Weekly Round Up

Saturday was just a perfect day to host the seasons Club Championship. With the course in fantastic condition, the day couldn't have been more fantastic for thirty six holes. The winner of the Club Championship trophy with scores of 70 and 73 was Josh Sims. A very notable score of level par gross 72 was posted in the afternoon by one of our many talented juniors Cameron Walker.

This Tuesday was the day of the Helen Booth Foursomes, one of the Ladies long standing traditional trophies, the eventual winners were Jenny Hurst and Pat Smith, just pipping the Lady Captain and Julia Prestt by 1.5 shots.

Also this week Ray Hughes has been away playing the Scottish Seniors Championship at Luffness Golf Club, in very tough conditions Ray posted scores of 71+75+76=222 finishing 4 shots behind the eventual winner. Congratulations to Ray on a great performance.

In the Shop

We have taken delivery yesterday of a range of fantastic Under Armour golf shirts. These shirts are priced at a competitive price of £39.95, with a range of sizes and colours.

We have had a good deal of interest in the Motocaddy trade-in deal, we now have taken our second drop, of the complete range of bags, push trollies and accessories, for any interested in upgrading their equipment.

New Buggies

This Wednesday I will be taking delivery of my new golf buggies. After three years of service the old buggies will be returned and replaced with updated models.

I cannot be guaranteed a delivery time slot, so apologies in advance for any disruption this may cause on the day if we have to swap the buggies over during play.

Range news

In Full Flow

With the summer season now in full flow we will once again be offering availability for practice balls after 6pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Tokens will be available from the bar after 6pm, we will still need the one-hour time slot to pick up the range balls between 5 pm and 6pm, if members could grant us that time to pick the balls up safely and efficiently we would be most grateful.

We've had an upgrade...

It is that time of year when we renew the range balls. This year we have upgraded the balls and after testing balls this week, we have decided to switch our range balls to TaylorMade.

These balls offer fantastic playability and superior FEEL for every level of golfer, who is looking to improve their technique or improve the touch and FEEL of their short game.

I am expecting delivery of the balls this Friday, hopefully in time for the Club Championship.

In addition, we have bought 24 new range baskets. I ask again if members could please refrain from putting these baskets in the back of their cars or lockers.

Coaching news

Ladies Summer Golf Academy

With the weather finally improving after a rotten few weeks, I am now taking names and contact numbers for any ladies who wish to begin the game of golf, as I will be running again the popular "Ladies Summer Golf Academy".

These sessions will be one hour sessions running from 5.30pm to 6.30pm starting on Tuesday 9th July for 4 weeks. If any members have wives, family members or friends looking to try the game of golf please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Junior Coaching

We are running a Junior golf school starting on Tuesday 23rd July for two days a week across a fortnight.

The aim of this school is to introduce golf to non junior members. This School will be FREE OF CHARGE, but places will be limited for safety reasons and allocated on a first come first served basis.

If any members have family or know of friends who would like to join the school and try the game of golf please pass on contact details and get in touch with the pro shop to book their place.

A link for the junior school containing all details will be sent out in the weekend update.

Tour news

Lucky number 17 for Reavie

If Chez Reavie plays the lottery this week then we recommend one of his picks is 17.

The American claimed the Travelers Championship by four shots with a total 17-under-par but despite shooting a joint back-nine record at TPC River Highlands on Saturday with a 7-under 28, a charging Keegan Bradley had his lead down to just one with three to play come Sunday.

Lucky number 17 came to the rescue though as Bradley shot a double bogey at the par 4 seventeenth whilst Reavie sunk a birdie at the same hole to stretch the lead to four where it stayed.

It was Chez Reavie’s second PGA Tour win and first since claiming the Canadian Open in 2008 – a tournament he won with a total score of (yep you guessed it) 17-under par.

Spooky.

All or nothing

Playing a par-3 over water is as much a mental test as anything else. After all, if it was just light rough between you and the green, would you still hit panic mode? Of course not, so what can you do to keep the nerves at bay and ensure your ball sails safely over the drink?

Stay calm and don't panic!

The biggest obstacle to overcome when playing over water is not actually the H2O, but rather your own mental barrier. Here's our advice:

Focus on a point behind the green that is in line with the flag. This can be a tree, branch, it could even be a leaf – anything just so long as it pulls your eye-line away from the wet stuff and closer to the pin
Stay relaxed. You have hit the ball a million times before so there is no need to panic now
Stick to your pre-shot routine. This is the best way to stay in the moment and make your next shot seem like any other

These tips will have you relishing those watery par-3s but if you find yourself still struggling with some of the tougher shots in golf, then speak to a member of the team about a lesson so we can iron out any kinks in your game.

Lost your groove?

Much like the tyres on your car, there comes a time when the grooves on your wedges have worn away so much that they need replacing. This process occurs slowly over time and is something that you might not notice at first glance, but when the wear becomes apparent it can have serious consequences on your game.

Fresh vs worn grooves

It might seem a little extreme, but the graphic above illustrates the impact worn grooves can have on shots into greens - a lower ball flight that rolls out farther compared to a wedge with fresh grooves.

Yes, you might be able to adapt by pitching the ball shorter and letting it roll out, but when you don't have much green to work with or are playing a delicate shot worn grooves will be of no use.

What do we suggest?

If dirt, grit and water have visibly harmed your wedge face, it’s time to get your groove back with a new wedge set-up.
